How Rosacea Medication Works

Rosacea has many causes, including a family history of rosacea and the immune system overreacting to normal bacteria. Treatment usually focuses on zapping surface bacteria with some combination of an antibiotic cream, gel, or wash and a treatment like azelaic acid which reduces inflammation. Our medical team may also prescribe an oral antibiotic, especially if you experience more extensive pimple and pustule-like bumps.

Evidence-Based Treatment

Rosacea medication isn’t one-size-fits-all, and the Nurx medical team will work to find what’s right for your skin. They prescribe medication (topical, oral or both), as appropriate, proven to reduce redness, bumps and other rosacea symptoms, and will follow up to make sure the treatment works. Because rosacea may not be your only skin issue, they’ll advise you on how to combine rosacea medication with other medications you may already be using.

There’s no need to wait to get your happiest skin — share your health history and photos online, any time, to get prescription medication delivered to your door. We’ll bill insurance if you have it and offer affordable pricing if you don’t.

Rosacea Questions?

  • How does rosacea treatment with Nurx work?

Nurx rosacea treatment is a one-year care plan designed in consultation with a board-certified dermatologist with expertise in delivering dermatology care via telehealth. Nurx rosacea treatment includes an online evaluation by a medical provider licensed in your state, medication prescribed and delivered (if medically appropriate), a scheduled check-in with the Nurx medical team, and unlimited follow-up with a Nurx medical provider for one year — you can message them any time with questions or to request prescription adjustments.

To start rosacea treatment with Nurx, visit the Nurx website or download the Nurx app and answer questions about your skin and your health history, and share a few photos of your face. These photos are uploaded directly into your secure Nurx account.

A trained and licensed member of our medical team will review your health profile and photos and ask any follow up questions in order to confirm that we can safely and appropriately treat you via telehealth and, if so, will create a personalized rosacea treatment plan that may include topical or oral medications. Our pharmacy will fill the prescription and mail medication, as appropriate, to your home. The medication will typically arrive 3-5 days after the prescription is filled.

If you aren’t sure if you have rosacea, our medical team will evaluate and provide a diagnosis. (Note: Nurx cannot treat severe rosacea involving phymatous changes, or thickening of the skin, ocular rosacea, or psoriasis and cannot evaluate you for skin cancer).

A Nurx medical provider will check in with you about ten weeks after treatment begins and ask you questions about how the treatment is working. If needed, the Nurx provider may adjust the treatment plan. In addition, patients may reach out to our medical team at any time with questions or to request a prescription change.

  • How much does rosacea treatment through Nurx cost?

The medical consultation to begin rosacea treatment costs $40, and this price covers one year of care by the Nurx medical team. It includes a medical provider licensed in your state evaluating your health and skin profile and creating your personalized treatment plan, writing prescriptions as appropriate, and following up with you to make sure your treatment is working. You may also message our medical team any time over the course of the year to ask questions or request prescription changes. The $40 is paid when you submit your request for treatment and is not covered by insurance, though you may be able to pay for it with FSA or HSA funds.

We will bill insurance (if you have it) for your medications, and the copay (if any) will depend on your particular plan. If you do not have insurance we offer transparent out-of-pocket pricing, which starts at $30/month for prescription topical medication and $20-40/month for prescription oral treatments.

  • What type of rosacea treatment does Nurx prescribe?

After reviewing your health profile and photographs of your skin, a Nurx medical provider will create a custom treatment plan using evidence-based prescription medications. You will receive one or more topical treatments, which may include a topical antibiotic, an antimicrobial cleanser, and/or azelaic acid. You may be prescribed an oral antibiotic as well. While completing the online assessment you may indicate if there are certain prescriptions that you are or are not interested in, but keep in mind our medical providers will prescribe the best treatment options for you based on your health profile. The Nurx pharmacy fills the prescriptions and sends medications to your doorstep, and after ten weeks of treatment the Nurx medical provider will follow up and adjust prescriptions if needed.

  • Who can use the rosacea service from Nurx?

Nurx rosacea treatment is available to adults 18 and older in the states where Nurx operates, once a Nurx medical provider reviews your assessment and determines that we can safely and appropriately treat you via telehealth. We cannot treat people who are currently pregnant because some of the medications we prescribed are contraindicated for pregnancy. Nurx cannot treat severe rosacea involving phymatous changes (thickening of the skin) or ocular rosacea and cannot evaluate you for skin cancer.
